A White-Laced Suit of Armor (Domaru Gusoku)
Edo period (18th-19th century)
The twenty-two plate suji-bachi (helmet with standing flanges) fitted with a large five-stage gilt-copper tehen kanamono (ornamental ring on the top of the bowl) and shinodare (ornamental strips emanating from the tehen kanamono) at the front and back and with gilt-copper kawagata-dai (mount for decorative crests) and three kuwagata (ornamental horns), the three-stage lacquered-leather o-manju jikoro (large, rounded neck guard) laced in white and orange, the large turnbacks applied with stencilled leather and gilt-copper family crests, the mabisashi (peak) also covered in leather and trimmed with rolled metal edging; face mask a happuri (solid plate guard for face and cheeks) lacquered black; the nodawa (throat guard) of two solid plates, and the kyubi no ita and gyoyo (guards for the armpits) partially covered in leather and applied with gilt-copper crests; the entire armor laced in white with the do (cuirass) of true scales lacquered black, the top section covered with leather, and with eight sections of five-lame false-scale tassets lacquered black, the hardware gilt-copper; large o-sode decorated to match the cuirass; haidate (thigh guards) iron scales; tsutsu gote (sleeves) with solid iron plates sewn onto the forearms; tsutsu suneate (solid-plate shin guards); with manju wa (waistcoat), war fan, saiha (paper-tasselled baton) and lacquer letter case; wood storage box
