Gilt-bronze Avalokitesvara
Koryo Dynasty (12th-13th century)
Hollow cast, seated virasana with hands in Amidamudra draped with a mantle with extended back collar, falling smooth across the back, chiselled with several deep curves to indicate folds below the elbows and wrists and ending in a panel of four u-shaped pleats over the folded legs, the inner robe tied at the waist below the open torso which is adorned with a jewelled necklace; the rounded, delicate face with downcast eyes and slightly protuberant lids above the small mouth cast in a smile, the ears long and plugged with circular studs, the hair cast in parallel, straight plaits which are long at the back, the usnisa on the top of the head contained within the pointed crown; the pointed, tiered crown hung with strings of jewels and the miniature figure of the Buddha Amitabha, two long tassels extend from the crown under each ear, over each shoulder and onto each upper arm where they are tied in two loops and end in four twisted, flame-like strings
