Kim was born in Seoul and studied at the College of Fine Arts, Seoul National University from 1948 to 1950. He also studied at the Art Students League of New York from 1965 to 1968. He moved to Paris in 1969. From 1957 he had numerous one-person and group exhibitions in Korea, Japan, the United States and Europe. He exhibited at the 2nd Paris Biennale in 1961 and at the 8th Sao Paulo Biennale in 1965. From 1972 to 1976 he participated in the Salon de Mai, Paris. In 1976 and 1979 he had one-person exhibitions at Hyundai Gallery, Seoul. He exhibited at the Tate Gallery, Liverpool in 1992 and had retrospectives at the National Musuem of Contemporary Art, Seoul in 1993. Similar works from the artist's early period, 1965-66, are published on pp. 282-84 of Kim Tschang-yeul, Museum of Contemporary Arts, Korea, 1993. Later he specialized in waterdrops. This painting was sold by the Bertha Schaefer Gallery, New York.
