A Rotterdam walnut and inlaid longcase clock with automaton
S. RUEL, ROTTERDAM, 18TH CENTURY
The hood with later pediment and giltwood herald and Mercury finials, later sound frets to the sides and brass-capped angled pilasters to the front, the trunk with canted angles flanking a scroll-framed trunk door with chequer and floral inlays, cast brass Chronos figure to the lenticle, on bombé plinth and carved front feet, the brass dial with silvered arcaded Roman and Arabic chapter ring, matted and engraved centre signed S. RUEL ROTTERDAM on a silvered plaque above a subsidiary seconds ring with date aperture to its centre, also with apertures indicating day of week and month and their signs, painted rolling moon, with alarm-setting disc to the centre of the blued steel hands, the dial below painted with grotto scene and with aperture revealing automaton ships and waves depicting the story of Perseus and Andromeda (Met. 4:665-739), the eight day four pillar movement with anchor escapement, Dutch strike, trip repeat and alarm on two bells, case and movement probably associated, the hood adapted
