This elegant breakfast table was probably commissioned by Henry, 2nd Duke of Newcastle (d.1794) for Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire. Originally designed in the late 1760's to designs by Stephen Wright (d. 1780), an Inventory of Clumber was taken in 1885. It is frustratingly brief, however, and as the Newcastles also inherited Thomas Hope's collection at the Deepdene and 35 Belgrave Square, as well as other estates, the original provenance of this table is impossible to pin down.
