Lot Essay

These HOWE chairs were inspired by a suite of George III prototypes attributed to Mayhew and Ince, which were supplied to William Aislabie for his Orangery at Studley Royal, Yorkshire. The Studley chairs, with similar legs and slatted seat but a pierced oval 'umbrella' back, were sold by Henry Vyner at Christie's King Street, 5 July 1990, lot 142.
