A wax and tallow chandler by training, Palmer's first patent for a 'metallic wick candle' was registered in 1830. This was followed in 1832 with a Patent which dealt with improved methods of candle manufacture and a patent for spring-action self-adjusting candle mechanisms in 1842. A related pair of brass candle lamps, originally supplied to the Earls of Carlisle for Castle Howard, Yorkshire, of Palmer's patent form but by 'Dibben Sloane Street', was exhibited in 'Country House Lighting', Exhibition Catalogue, 1992, p.99, p. 71, no.50.
