With a simulated grey veined marble top with an ovolo edge, the frieze with a part-foliate scroll and strapwork frieze on cabriole legs with scroll ornament to one end and polygonal tapered legs to the other, constructed in two halves but apparently always conceived as a 'sample' table, inscribed in white chalk 'Be. 23/1/79'

Lot Essay

Designed in the 'Elizabethan'/Jacobethan and Rococo revival styles, this table is almost certainly a literal realisation of a Pattern Book sample table. Such 'Elizabethan' strapwork ornament featured as early as 1838 in Richard Bridgen's antiquarian Furniture with candelabra.
