Lot Essay

Designed in the 'antique' manner with strigal-fluting inspired by Roman sarcophagi, this type of grate was known as a 'Forest' hob grate because of the distinctive shape of the front, with 'Hobs' for kettles to each side. Related grates were manufactured by Carron Co, the Scottish iron foundry, whose signature features on the closely related late 18th Century grate illustrated in C. Gilbert and A. Wells Cole, 'The Fashionable Fireplace - Country House Studies Number 2', Exhibition Catalogue, Leeds, 1985, p.27, no.13.
