Lot Essay

With its unusual obelisk ornament, this grate is clearly inspired by designs for fire grates traditionally attributed to John Vardy, which were executed for Hackwood Park, Hampshire. Commissioned by the Duke of Bolton, these designs remained at Hackwood when the house was sold by William, 5th Baron Bolton to William, 1st Viscount Camrose, and were finally dispersed in Christie's House sale, Hackwood Park, 20-22 April 1998, lot 612.
