Lot Essay

With its distinctive Greek doric columnar legs, this side chair reveals the influence of the architect Henry Holland. Reflecting the latest French fashions, Holland employed leading cabinet-maker's such as Morel and Hughes and Marsh and Tatham, as on the related suite supplied to Samuel Whitbread II for Southill Park, Bedfordshire (see F. Watson F.S.A, 'The Furniture and Decoration', Southill, A Regency House, London, 1951, p. 21. and fig. 46).
