Lot Essay

Designed in the early 19th Century 'antique' manner, with pilasters inset with reeded panels, terminating with acanthus-wrapped 'truss' brackets and capped by flowered 'patera' tablets, this bookcase relates closely to the celebrated Library supplied by Gillows on 8 May 1815 for Mere Hall, Lancashire. Commissioned by Thomas Langford Brooke (d.1815) shortly folowing his return from the Grand Tour, the Mere bookcases, including related small pedestal cabinets, were sold by the late Mrs Helen Langford-Brooke, Mere Hall, Christie's House sale, 23 May 1994, lots 187-193.
