An automaton archer by David Secrett,
the carved yew and fruitwood figure with articulated eyes, tongue, thumb, head, hands and feet, in leather tunic, hood, boots and red cotton doublet, seated on a fretted stool, a bow in his left hand and a revolving arrow holder at his right, the fusee-driven wood mechanism in the base controlling seven cams -- 16in. Lot Essay

The archer lifts an arrow from the revolving holder, his thumb locks it into place as his left arm rises to align with the bow; he then closes one eye as his head bends forwards and he sticks out his tongue in concentration; when the arrow is fired, he lowers both arms, stamps his left foot, turns his head and blinks.
