Lot Essay

This work is a preparatory study for Porte (Mosquée verte) which is illustrated in Léon Gérême Monographie révisée Catalogue raisonné à jour 1992 as Catalogue Number 501.

Walter B. Denny has identified this scene as the door way into the tomb of Mehmet I, which Gérome would have seen during his visit to Bursa in 1875.
