Lot Essay

Thomas Sheraton's The Cabinet-maker and Upholsterer's Drawing-Book of 1793 includes a closely related pattern for a 'knifecase', pl.39. While the top of the case features a flowering urn within crossed branches, Sheraton notes that the top 'sometimes has only an inlaid patera'.
