Each with a scrolled shaped toprail and a vase-shaped splat with horizontal crasting, with 18th century gros-pointe needlework drop-in seats, on bell-flower capped cabriole legs with pad feet, one chair inscribed in blue pencil 8888 (2)

Lot Essay

The sophisticated chair back pattern relates closely to a set with gilt-enriched carving. One of the chairs is illustrated in H. Cescinsky, English Furniture of the Eighteenth Century, New York, n.d. (c.1920), vol.II, p.26, fig.8 while a pair from the suite was sold in these Rooms, 19 April 2001, lot 225. Another similar pair with gilt embellishments is illustrated in L.Synge, Mallett Millennium, London, 1999, p.53, fig.49.
