ONLY ISSUE OF THIS SCARCE PAMPHLET. The Dutch had captured the island at the end of 1672; it was recaptured by the English under Captain Richard Munden the following May. Munden sailed home with three Dutch ships as prizes, and was knighted by Charles II as a reward for his services. Wing R 865.

Contemporary yellow wrappers; together with a printed extract headed 'Observations for proving the Going of Mr. Ellicott's Clock, at St. Helena, by Mr. Charles Mason' [1762]; a collection of 19 London newspapers, comprising The London Chronicle (2 issues), The News (12 issues), The Weekly Intelligence (4 issues), and John Bull (one issue), dated 1794-1826, containing news of the island, most importantly during Napoleon's period of residence; 5 official proclamations relating to St. Helena, dated 1842-1900, printed as handbills; 'Island St. Helena Port & Quarantine Regulations,' printed handbill on blue paper, c. 1860; three small photographs of Smorenberg who escaped from the island in December, 1901; and a telegram from the Governor to the Secretary of State for the Colonies on the Death of Edward VII, 7 May [1910], issued as a handbill; the lot sold not subject to return.
