Index in manuscript, the letterpress Acts numbered in manuscript, one Act supplied in manuscript. 19th-century half-roan boards, upper cover with manuscript paper label titled Laws of Antigua Volume 5, dated 2nd March 1858 (worn). Provenance: W. H. Brown -- Admiralty Library (deaccession stamp). [Together with:] a collection of broadsheet Acts of Antigua, dated 1856-1858, unbound (some wear to edges). The laws relate to the establishment of the Fire Brigade in St John, liquor licensing, duty on rum, militia, public health, road improvements, mounted police, riots etc.; and Holberton Hospital Regulations. Folio, 3pp. [c.1856], the 'General Rules' for the hospital which was established in 1856, specifying the duties of the dispenser.

A collection of laws of Antigua, printed locally. A fascinating insight into the regulation of life on a West Indian island in the mid-19th century. Together with a copy of John Luffman's A Brief Account of the Island of Antigua, together with the customs and manners of its inhabitants, as well white as black. London: J. Luffman, [1790]. 12° (164 x 104mm). Folding engraved map by Luffman dated 1789. (Light marginal browning to title.) Contemporary calf (joints split, some wear to extremities). The second, revised edition of Luffman's work, compiled from his letters written between 1786 and 1788. It also contains an account of the 'food, cloathing [sic], labor, and punishment, of slaves.'
