DIXON, James (1788-1871). Narrative of a Voyage to New South Wales, and Van Dieman's Land, in the ship Skelton, during the year 1820. With observations on the state of these colonies, and a variety of information, calculated to be useful to emigrants... with an appendix, containing Governor M'Quarie's report regarding Van Dieman's Land, tables of the population, list of articles suitable for exprotation, &c. 8° (188 x 114mm). Half-title. Engraved frontispiece. (Some browning and old dampstaining to frontispiece, light offsetting of frontispiece onto title.) Original purple cloth, paper label to spine, lettered /Dixon's/Voyage/to/N.S. Wale [sic.]/[double horizontal fillet]/Price 4s. Bds.', uncut (spine and edges of covers faded and slightly soiled, label rubbed with loss of one letter). Provenance: Robert Oswald (bookplate dated 1843).
FIRST EDITION: rare in original cloth. The author notes in the preface that this work 'was written entirely for the purpose of giving to the public, and those emigrating, the most recent and useful information, regarding the Colonies of Van Dieman's Land and New South Wales; - Countries which are rising every day in interest and importance, and which, at present, present an important field for emigration'. Ferguson I, 858; cf. Wantrup 57 (copy in boards, with 4pp. of advertisements).
