Without title or text. 12 chromolithographic plates, each trimmed to the edge of the image and mounted on thin card, title label to verso of each mount, publisher's blind-stamp to recto of each mount. (The final plate with mount reinforced on the verso, most mounts slightly spotted). Later purple half calf incorporating the original brown cloth-covered boards, early retailer's label (Henry Franks of Geelong) pasted to front free enpaper (some old soiling to covers).
FIRST EDITION OF 'A KEYSTONE IN ANY COLLECTION OF AUSTRALIAN PLATE BOOKS AND NO COLLECTION CAN BE CONSIDERED COMPLETE WITHOUT IT' (Wantrup). 'In April 1865 Nicholas Chevalier published the first Australian plate book printed by the new chromolithographic technique... [It] was printed and published by Charles Troedel, who had arrived in the colony in 1860. It comprises twelve... of Chevalier's best Victorian landscapes, painted during the several tours he undertook with [Eugen] von Guerard and Georg von Neumayer through the Victorian bush... Quite apart from the fact that Chevalier introduced a new technique in plate book production, this work is an important contribution to the Australian plate book genre. Chevalier's Album is the first printed expression of High Victorian taste in landscape art by a key figure in the late romantic era of Australian colonial art.
