MAURITIUS.- Manuscript account book 'Isle of France Port North West', 22 May 1798 - 1 September 1799, listing payments and receipts, the majority by name of ship and captain, occasionally specifying merchandise (including shirts, an anchor, indigo, pork, candles), 43 pages, folio plus blanks, reversed calf (worn, rebacked).
An interesting account book listing cargos and payments for Port North West. Mauritius, whose name originated with a period of Dutch possession from 1598 to 1710, was given the name 'Ile de France' when first the French East India Company and then the French Government controlled it, from 1715. The name reverted to Mauritius when the island became a British possession in 1814.
