BORY de SAINT-VINCENT, Jean-Baptiste-Geneviéve-Marcellin (1778-1846). (Light marginal dampstaining and occasional spotting to atlas, hardly touching images.) Contemporary calf gilt, red and green morocco lettering pieces (extremities lightly rubbed), and original boards, with printed paper title label on spine and upper cover (extremities worn).

A highly-accomplished scientist, Bory de St-Vincent was a naturalist, cartographer, physiologist, geographer and geologist. Mentioned by Charles Darwin in the preface to the third edition of The Origin of the Species, he was chief naturalist on board the sloop Le Naturaliste, in the expedition led by Captain Baudin. Born in 1754, Captain Baudin offered his scientific and military service to the French East India Company before joining the navy. Following a triumphant two years scientific expedition to the West Indies in 1798, in 1800 he convinced Napoleon and the Institute of France to support a scheme to explore unknown parts of southern Australia. Baudin sailed from Le Havre in October 1800, calling at Port St. Louis on his way to Australia. Toussaint, D 181.
