Small 2° (270 x 200mm). Title with wood-engraved vignette, some leaves watermarked '1813'. (Very occasional light and unobtrusive spotting.) Contemporary red morocco gilt titled on upper cover (small stain on lower cover, extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR, to Lieutenant Colonel Leitch; presented to -- Miss Finniss (inscriptions on title).

EXTREMELY RARE. FIRST EDITION of the catalogue of plants cultivated in Mauritius, printed on the island in the very early years of British rule. Compiled under the auspices of the Governor, Sir Robert Townsend Farquhar, Burke's work was issued in November 1816, by the Government-controlled printers, Baron and Souvignec. The invaluable catalogue lists the exotic plants with their 'English and French names, native places of Growth, by whom introduced, and the epoch of their introduction'. Toussaint, C 1496.
