(Occasional minor browning or fading, small neat tear to title and final leaf.) Later leather-backed boards, upper cover with label inscribed with title (upper corners bumped). The Royal Botanical Gardens, in the village of Pamplemousses, east of Port Louis, were established in 1735 by Governor Mahé de La Bourdonnais. Vegetable gardens were first created around Château Mon Plaisir, as a source for ships calling at Port Louis. The gardens were later cultivated by the French horticulturist Pierre Poivre who introduced new and indigenous species. James Duncan, a British horticulturist, rescued the gardens from neglect in 1849. Toussaint, C 1870.
