TELFAIR, Charles (1777-1833). Some Account of the State of Slavery at Mauritius since the British Occupation in 1810, in refutation of anonymous charges promulgated against Government and that Colony. Port Louis, Mauritius: Vallet and Asselin, 1830.
8° (202 x 140mm). (Occasional light spotting.) Partly printed on blue paper. Late 19th-century citron half morocco, top edge gilt, others uncut. Provenance: presentation copy to Charles Desbassaynes (with inscription by the author to 'his affectionate friend' on front endpaper; several corrections to text) -- N. de Trevise (stamp on title and booklabel). FIRST EDITION. A RARE, EARLY MAURITIUS IMPRINT in which the author defended conditions on his plantations, following his denunciation as a monster in the Anti-Slavery Monthly Reporter. A second edition was printed in London in the same year. A naturalist, as well as a slave owner, Telford established the botanical gardens at Mauritius and Réunion. Toussaint A 487.

This government report was an enquiry into the slave registry of Mauritius and 'the failure of that part of the Registry Act of 30 January 1826, which requires that regular Triennial Returns of its Population be made to the Secretary of State.'
