BURTON, Richard Francis. The Lake Regions of Central Africa. A Picture of Exploration. London: Longman, Green, 1860.
2 volumes, 8° (233 x 152mm). Folding route map heightened in colour and 12 chromoxylographic plates. Original blind-stamped, gilt-lettered dull violet cloth, (spines faded to brown, repaired at head and foot).
THE EXTREMELY RARE FIRST ISSUE OF THE FIRST EDITION, of which very few copies were sold. The general release of Burton's popular account of the expedition at first proved unpopular with readers despite his having received the Gold Medal of the Royal Geographical Society. He left the controversy with Speke behind, however, and sailed for America months before publication. Penzer p. 65-66. Casada 42. Spink 20.
