BURTON, Richard Francis, and James MACQUEEN. The Nile Basin. Part I. Showing Tanganyika to be Ptolemy's Western Lake Reservoir. A memoir read before the Royal Geographical Society, November 14, 1864. With prefatory remarks. Part II. Captain Speke's Discovery of the Source of the Nile. A Review. London: Tinsley Brothers, 1864.
8° (195 x 135mm). Three engraved maps. Contemporary pigskin backed cloth, (re-hinged, slightly rubbed). Provenance: James Shey Burton.(Presentation copy for the publishers)
FIRST EDITION, PUBLISHERS PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed from the author on half-title 'Jam: Shey Burton F.R.G.S. From the Author 30th November 1864.' This is Burton's first public statement following Speke's death and MacQueen's 'scathing attack' on Speke. Speke's 'Journal of Discovery' 1863 further inflamed the two men's feud. Burton found support from MacQueen and sympathy from colleagues like Charles Beke, Francis Galton and even Livingstone. A verbal duel between the two was scheduled for 16 September, the day Speke died. Burton went on with his lecture before the R.G.S. on 14 November, prefaced this extended treatise on 21 November, adjoined MacQueen's essay, and it was published and presented to James Burton by the 30th. The affair died a long death and in 1881 Burton admitted in print (the 'Athenaeum') that he had been wrong about the source of the Nile and Speke right. Penzer 74-75. Casada 49. Spink 34.
