EXCEEDINGLY RARE AND UNRECORDED OFFPRINT of the entire paper read by Burton before the R.G.S. on December 11, 1871. Penzer records only a 2-page abstract from the Proceedings of the R.G.S. Vol. XVI, 1871-2 and a 2-page discussion of the paper; neither is recorded by Casada. It was printed in full as an appendix to Vol. I of his 'Zanzibar' in January 1872. Burton himself never approached Kilimanjaro on his expedition to the Central Lakes but chose the southern route away from Masai lands. Wakefield, working out of Mombasa with Johann Krapf and Johannes Rebmann, the missionaries who discovered Mount Kilimanjaro, had very thoroughly surveyed and recorded the routes and, to Burton's delight, was an expert philologist. Burton's paper praised his largely unrecognized work in showing that Lake Victoria Nyanza was not the sole lake in the Kilimanjaro-Kenya basin but lay within a series of lakes. Further to Burton's delight, Wakefield's findings supported his 'Nile Basin' of 1864. Wakefield and Burton's 'Lake' is, in fact, Speke Gulf, whose entrance lies behind the islands of Ukara and Ukerewe in Lake Victoria.
