The first edition with the preface by Burton, and his new title-page, preface and extensive notes, drawn mostly from his experiences crossing the continent. He carried and used a copy of the 1859 first edition on his trans-continental journey and was 'induced to re-edit it' by Trübner, bringing up to date Marcy's 28 routes.
