BURTON, Richard Francis. Abeokuta and the Camaroons Mountains. An Exploration. London: Tinsley Brothers, 1863.

FIRST EDITION, A PUBLISHERS PRESENTATION COPY signed for the author on title-pages 'To John Kiernan from Rich.d F. Burton.' As well as fulfilling his diplomatic duties, Burton went in search of gorillas and cannibal tribes in 1862, having read Paul du Chaillu's newly published 'Exploration and Adventures in Equatorial Africa.' His chief task, however, was to suggest measures 'to secure [Britain's] influence upon the seaboard of Yoruba' (having just obtained Chief Abeokuta's mark to a treaty) and to explore the mountains which he felt had real possibilities as a convict station, a free African colony or as a sanitarium. Penzer wrote that Burton's own copy of Vol. I was marked by him for a second edition but it was never published. The first edition was remaindered, however, in a red-brown cloth binding and Burton's portrait in Vol. I was replaced with an engraved plate. His portrait was rarely published in his books. This photograph is a reproduction of his wedding portrait by Louis Desanges. This copy was signed by his publishers in his absence, perhaps while on his belated honeymoon or at Fernando Po.
