BURTON, Richard Francis. Letters from the Battle-Fields of Paraguay. London: Tinsley Brothers, 1870. 8° (230 x 149mm). Folding map, frontispiece and vignette half-title, mostly unopened. Original blind-stamped bright blue cloth gilt. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE IN EXCEPTIONALLY FINE CONDITION. Another temporary resignation from the consular service because of ill health ended Burton's South American escapades. Rather than return directly to London he went to the River Plate to report on the long, bloody boundary war which pitted Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay (supported by Britain) against Paraguay and its dictator (supported by the United States). One historian calls Burton's reports from the battlefields some of the best examples of 19th-century war reporting, while another says they were almost entirely second-hand. Penzer p. 84-84. Casada 45. Spink 45.
Thomas J. HUTCHINSON. The Paranà; with incidents of the Paraguayan War, and South American Recollections, 1861 to 1868. London: Edward Stanford, 1868. 8° (232 x 150mm). FIRST EDITION PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR, with an effusive inscription on front endpaper to the Countess of Portsmouth, July 28th, 1877. Hutchinson was HBM Consul at Rosario, proposed as the capital of Paraguay, when Burton visited his 'good colleague.' In 'Letters from the Battle-Fields' Burton commends him for his heroic services during two major cholera epidemics.
