Original grey cloth gilt with bevelled edges, upper cover illustrated in gilt and decorated in black, lower cover in blind, (spine strengthened, a little faded or soiled). Provenance: Lady Otway. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, THE DEDICATION COPY PRESENTED BY THE AUTHOR, to 'Lady Otway with the kind regards of Al-Haj Abdullah' [in Arabic] on half-title. The Dedication Leaf assures 'Dear Lady Otway' that 'the Wanderer in Bologna has not forgotten your gracious and graceful hospitality.' When the Burtons move to Trieste in December 1874 Isabel's uncle, Lord Arundell of Wardour, authorized her to assume a title of the Holy Roman Empire which had been in their family for generations and hence forward her cards were printed 'Mrs. Richard Burton, nèe Countess Isabel Arundell of Wardour.' It assured their introduction into Society. Burton signed this copy with the name he adopted after performing the Hajj. In Trieste he indulged his fascination for archaeology, he dug on the Istrian Peninsula and was invited by Count Gazzadini to dig on his property near Bologna in its pre-Roman Etruscan and Villanovan tombs.
