4° (268 x 207mm). Original printed yellow wrappers, in a yellow cloth case with cloth flaps and inner chemise, (without a half-title as called for by Penzer but with all three preliminary leaves; wrapper very lightly soiled). Provenance: Richard F. Burton (author's inscriptions).
THE AUTHOR'S INSCRIBED AND ANNOTATED COPY OF THE VERY RARE FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE of his finest poem, initialed by him on upper wrapper, 'R.F.B.' Also with a 13-line inscription by him on inside upper wrapper and extensive marginal notes on 2 pages. Contemporary reviews mounted to first blank. With a loose typed transcription of Burton's notes which are from the poet Leslie Stephen on Spinoza. Burton's poem was regaled by some, condemned by others as 'supremely agnostic' but acknowledged as anti-Christian, Pantheistic and even Buddhistic. Penzer p. 97-103. Casada 84. Spink 64.
