BURTON, Richard Francis. A Glance at The "Passion Play." London: W.H. Harrison, 1881.
8° (187 x 128mm). Frontispiece. Original red cloth with bevelled edges, cover and spine lettered and ruled in gilt, all edges gilt, (spine slightly faded).
A RARE PRESENTATION COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, inscribed 'With the authors best love.' On their 1880 sojourn in Bavaria, Burton wrote his account to 'compare, haply to trace, some affinity between this survival of the Christian "Mystery" and the living scenes of El-Islam and at Meccah.' His sardonic work was published the next year; his wife's pious work was published posthumously. This was at a time when both the Burtons became interested in spiritualism but with different conclusions. Penzer p. 106. Casada 36. Spink 70.
