SALT, Henry (1780-1827). A Voyage to Abyssinia, and Travels into the interior of that country, executed under the orders of the British government, in the years 1809 and 1810; in which is included, an account of the Portuguese settlements on the east coast of Africa, visited in the course of the voyage; a concise narrative of late events in Arabia Felix; and some particulars respecting the aboriginal African tribes. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL BOARDS OF THIS 'VERY INTERESTING WORK' (Blackmer). 'Salt, who had been trained as a painter, first visited Egypt when he toured India and North Africa with Viscount Valentia... He returned to Africa in 1809 on a government mission to establish contact with the King of Abyssinia which occupied him for two years. This work describes those travels and the appendix contains vocabularies of various African dialects': Blackmer 1479; Brunet V,96; Hilmy II,208.
