FIRST DUTCH EDITIONS signed by Redelinghuys on both title-pages and with two A.L.s. by him dated 1787, tipped in . The author was one of the leaders of the Cape 'Patriot' Movement who agitated in Holland for the rights of Burghers at the Cape, who opposed to English rule there and published this book as a call to the Burghers to establish a popular government at the Cape. His letters addressed to "Friends" are assurance to the Burghers that he continues "to do his duty" to them, testified by the "enclosed book." Bernard's work gives a picture of the East India Co. administration from the point of view of the colonists. Mendelssohn I, 117; II, 204.
