LIVINGSTONE, David (1813-1873). Title with wood-engraved vignette, folding tinted lithographic frontispiece, engraved portrait of the author, 22 plates, 2 tinted lithographs, 20 wood-engravings, folding wood-engraved and letterpress plate of a geological section, 2 folding maps with routes marked by hand in red one in pocket at end, 20 wood-engraved illustrations. (Light spotting to frontispiece, light soiling to title.) Original brown morocco-grained cloth, covers blocked in blind, spine blocked in blind and lettered in gilt (neatly recased, modern endpapers), 20th-century purple cloth box. Provenance: John Arrowsmith (1790-1873, presentation inscription from the author, with signature of the publisher added 'John Arrowsmith Esq. with the kindest regards of David Livingstone and [all the preceeding in Lingstone's hand, then in Murray's hand:] John Murray').
FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE: PRESENTATION COPY TO THE CARTOGRAPHER RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MAPS. John Arrowsmith, one of the major figures in British cartography in the mid 19th Century, produced the two folding maps for the preseent work. The illustrations for the second issue differ from the first in that tinted lithographs drawn on stone by T. Picken and published by Day & Son were substituted for the folding wood-engraved frontispiece and the wood-engraved plates facing pages 66 and 225: the subjects remained the same.
