A collection of ten albumen carte-de-visites including seven of Henry Morton Stanley, one of Kalulu, and two of Lord Stanley
155 x 102mm. and smaller.

The collection comprising an early studio portrait of Stanley by Ch.Nedey, Alexandria, inscribed 'To the choragus of the Literati in Abyssinia - this from his "American Cousin"' on the reverse, dating to around June 1868, when Stanley was reporting on Napier's campaign in Abyssinia for the New York Herald. After his famous news scoop in the B Abyssinian campaign, Stanley had this carte-de-visite made up to celebrate his success. Four portraits (one of Stanley, one of Kalulu and two of Stanley 'in the dress he wore when he met Livingstone in Africa' with Kalulu) by the Stereoscopic Co. in 1872, a little known portrait of Stanley during the Anglo-American trans-African expedition titled 'HM Stanley at Cabenda 1876 & 7' on the reverse, and two of Stanley in later life, one signed and dated 'Henry M Stanley/1890' on the mount.
