STANLEY'S CULPABILITY FOR THE FATE OF THE REAR COLUMN. The correspondents write with reference to an article by Quilter blaming Stanley for the fate of the Rear Column of the Emin Pasha expedition, which included the murder of Major Barttelot and the death from fever of J.S. Jameson ('Mr H. Stanley as Leader and Comrade', The Universal Review, Vol. 8 (1890)). Andrew Jameson (brother of J.S. Jameson) writes at the beginning of the month that he cannot give Quilter access to Jameson's journals, as they are to be published by his widow; on the 27th he writes praising the 'splendid article of yours on the 15th ... it will take Stanley some trouble to get out of the noose'. The letters by Walter G. Barttelot (brother of Major Barttelot) condemn Stanley's 'attack by insinuations on Major Barttelot's personal character and his manner of meeting his death', and lay the onus of responsibility on Stanley on the grounds of his 'letter of instruction painfully carried out by the rear column -- His promise to return in November 1887 whereas he does not return till August 1888', and other grounds; also ironically criticising the account of the Rear Column survivor, William Bonny -- 'Bonny gives accounts of his personal bravery ... but he is always alone when the brave things are done'; on 29 December he notes as 'outrageous' that W.H. Smith has counterordered the Universal Review, presumably because of its anti-Stanley stance. Walter B. Barttelot (father of Major Barttelot) is equally critical of Stanley's attitude to 'the dead who died endeavouring to the utmost of their ability to carry out the instructions he had given them'. (7)
