Smythe paying expenses of travel', one page, 8vo, on paper with a printed heading of 'The Dark Continent', backed onto a leaf from an album, with a carte-de-visite photograph of Stanley; the second to D.C. Parry, Union Square, New York, 8 November 1890, commenting humorously on his lack of portrait photographs to give out, 'To gratify every applicant I should require several dozen Saratoga trunks, and the Custom House officers might suspect I was about to open an extensive business', one page, 8vo.
