STANLEY, Henry Morton (1841-1904). Two autograph letters signed ('Henry M. Stanley' and 'H.M. Stanley'), the first to Mr Appleton, 160 New Bond Street, London, 9 September 1886, 'I think Forbes' despatch contains in brief every thing needed ... Smythe paying expenses of travel', one page, 8vo, on paper with a printed heading of 'The Dark Continent', backed onto a leaf from an album, with a carte-de-visite photograph of Stanley; the second to D.C. Parry, Union Square, New York, 8 November 1890, commenting humorously on his lack of portrait photographs to give out, 'To gratify every applicant I should require several dozen Saratoga trunks, and the Custom House officers might suspect I was about to open an extensive business', one page, 8vo.
Appleton was for a period Stanley's lecture agent, although their connection was to end in a court case over unpaid commission. (2)
