SPEKE, John Hanning (1827-1864). Autograph letter signed to 'Schofield', Jordans, 3 September [18]63, on pink paper, 3 lines written on one page, 8vo (integral leaf removed, laid on card).
An exasperated note to an unidentified correspondent: 'I will see you hanged first and then I won't. It's all rot'.
A dramatic line written when Speke, who was in the midst of preparing his Journal of the Discovery of the Nile for publication by Blackwood in Edinburgh, had briefly returned home to Somerset. The cryptic comment is presumably connected with one of the rumours which were circulating about the truthfulness or otherwise of his account of the expedition.
