Errata leaf. 48 engraved plates after Herbert, 43 hand-coloured, extra-illustrated with two loosely inserted als.: one from Arthington Worsley to Henry Elwes, 12 September 1915; the second from Dr.A. Ragionieri to an unnamed correspondent, 12 February 1916, both concerning lilies. (Occasional light offsetting of plates onto text, 20mm. tear to outer blank margin of N4.) Original purple cloth, covers blocked in blind, spine in gilt (faded, bumped, small tears to head and foot of spine.) Provenance: Henry John Elwes (1846-1922, presentation inscription to:); Sir F. Moore ('Sir F. Moore from hid friend H J Elwes May 1922').

FIRST EDITION THUS, WITH A PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION FROM H.J. ELWES, THE GREAT CHAMPION OF THE GENUS LILIUM. This work started life as an appendix to vol.48 of the Botanical Magazine in 1821, with four plates and 52 pages of text. William Herbert issued the present much expanded edition in 1837 and as the lettering on the spine makes clear, the work was available with both hand-coloured plates (for 38s.) and uncoloured plates.
