Contemporary green glazed paper-covered boards (textured to resemble straight-grained morocco), covers with border of a single fillet enclosing a floral interlace roll, backstrip divided into six compartments by single gilt fillets, lettered in the second compartment, g.e. A FINE COPY OF THIS RARE WORK recalling the close collaboration between Thory and Redouté on Les Roses. The species described here was evidently named by Thory in grateful appreciation of Redouté's work on Les Roses, and the 8pp. Extrait.. is a review of the first part of this latter work, but also includes an overview of Redouté's previously published works. Rosa Redoutea... is recorded by Stafleu and Cowan, but they make no mention of either the portrait or the plates being in two states. The presence of these "additional" plates, together with the Extrait... may indicate that the present volume is some sort of de luxe issue - perhaps intended for presentation. Stafleu & Cowan VI, 14.293.
