(Lacking first leaf, blank except for signature mark 'A' on recto, lower margins restored with some catch-letters and catch-words supplied in pen-and-ink facsimile, shoulder notes cropped with some loss.) FIRST EDITION, FIRST MENTION OF THE DODO. The expedition to Java set out under the command of Jacob van Neck and Wijbrant van Warwyck. The small uninhabited island which they named Hemskerk island was found to contain a 'great quantity of foules twise as bigge as swans,' called 'Walghstocks or Wallowbirdes being very good meat.' This passage (pp. 16-17) is THE FIRST RECORDED REFERENCE TO THE DODO IN ENGLISH (Rothschild quotes from the 1601 Amsterdam edition in Extinct Birds, p. 172). STC 14478.
