(Repaired tear to lower blank margin of title, light old stain to lower half of title.) Red 20th-century half morocco gilt, t.e.g (inner hinges split). Provenance: Mr. Stearn (presentation inscription 'To Mr Stearn with the compliments of M. Orozeo April 3rd 1881').
FIRST EDITION with 12 very fine plates of 46 different species from paintings by the well-known Mexican landscape painter Josè Marìa Velasco (1840-1912). Montes's text includes detailed decriptions of 48 different species. The 'Mr. Stearn' of the inscription is possibly Robert Edwards Carter Stearns (1827-1909) an American ornithologist of note.
