RHINOCEROS -- DAUBENTON, Louis Jean Marie (1716-1800), autograph letter signed by Louis-Jean-Marie Daubenton as Director of the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle, to an unidentified correspondent, Paris, 28 September 1793, one page, 4to (staining to upper margin).
The French naturalist Daubenton writes on hearing of the death of the rhinoceros at the menagerie that its dissection will be of considerable interest for comparative anatomy, and looks forward to displaying its stuffed skin and mounted skeleton at the Museum: 'le Rhinoceros sera dissequé avec grand soin, il est tres interressant pour l'anatomie comparée, car il est unique dans son genre, et que la conformation de ses parties interieures est absolument inconnue; sa peau empaillee et son squelette feront un bon effet au cabinet d'histoire naturelle'. [Together with:] an early Portuguese text on the rhinoceros, Edemundo KELBEK. Relaça de hum formidavel bicho novamente aparecido em Africa nas Costas de Ajan. Lisbon: Pedro Ferreira, 1742. 8° (191 x 132mm). 8pp., full-page woodcut of rhinoceros, woodcut initial and tailpiece.
