12 volumes in 10, including supplement, 8° (245 x 150mm). 95 hand-coloured engraved plates by Wagstaff and others after Curtis and Westwood. (Very occasional light spotting not affecting plates.) Contemporary green half-morocco gilt, t.e.g. (extremities rubbed, splits to a few joints). Provenance: T. Vernon Wollaston (1822-1878, armorial bookplate).

A COMPLETE SET OF THE WORK WHICH CONTAINS DARWIN'S FIRST PUBLICATION, a descripton of the Common Noctuid, or Flame Shoulder Moth (Ochropleura plecta) in vol. II of the Haustellata section. 'While an undergraduate at Cambridge, Darwin had sent records of insects that he had captured to ... Stephens and some of these where published in the Illustrations of British Entomology. He refers to the pleasure that he got from seeing his name in print against his records of beetles in his autobiography' (Norman). The present copy belonged to T.
