LAWRENCE, David Herbert (1885-1930). Sun. Paris: Roger Lescaret for The Black Sun Press/Éditions Narcisse, 1928.
8° (240 x 160mm). Title and text printed in red and black. Colour-printed frontispiece after Lawrence. Original printed wrappers, glassine dustwrapper, gold paper covered chemise and slipcase (dustwrapper lightly rubbed at edges, slipcase somewhat worn). Provenance: Maurice R. Neville, Santa Barbara CA (loosely-inserted bookseller's invoice, dated 14 November 1986).
FIRST UNEXPURGATED EDITION, LIMITED TO 165 COPIES, THIS COPY N OF 15 ON JAPON, SIGNED BY LAWRENCE. Sun was first published in the journal New Coterie, which was published by Charles Lahr; it was then printed in book form under the imprint of Esther Archer (Lahr's wife, under whose name Lahr operated) in an edition of 100 copies. As Roberts notes, 'The designation of [the Black Sun Press editions] as "unexpurgated" may be misleading. According to the Lawrence correspondence, the manuscript from which [the Archer/Lahr edition] was published could not be located; hence the manuscript Lawrence sent to Harry Crosby represents a later rewritten version [described by Lawrence as the "final manuscript"] rather than the original version from which the text of [the Archer/Lahr edition] was derived'. Loosely-inserted is Spanish portrait postcard of Lawrence. Minkoff A15; Published in Paris p.408; Roberts Lawrence (2001) A35c.
