Original printed wrappers, glassine dustwrapper, gold paper covered chemise with fore-edge ties (slight partial fading to wrappers, skilful repair to foot of spine). Provenance: Percival Reginald Stephensen (1901-1965, presentation inscription on flyleaf 'To P.R. Stephensen , from D.H. Lawrence , at Bandol. FIRST UNEXPURGATED EDITION, LIMITED TO 165 COPIES, THIS NO. IV OF AN UNKNOWN NUMBER OF HORS COMMERCE COPIES ON HOLLAND VAN GELDER ZONEN. INSCRIBED BY LAWRENCE. The Lawrences stayed at the Hôtel Beau Rivage at Bandol, Var from 17 November 1928 until the beginning of March 1929; their visitors included Stephensen who was, at that time, working at Jack and Norman Lindsay's Fanfrolico Press in London. Stephensen had proposed publishing a de luxe limited edition volume of Lawrence's paintings and the purpose of his two-day visit to Bandol was to discuss it further. However, Lawrence found the Lindsays' aesthetic antipathetic, so Stephensen established The Mandrake Press, in order to publish the work and The Paintings of D.H. Lawrence was issued in June 1929 in an edition of 510 copies, priced at 10 guineas for the ordinary copies and 50 for the special copies.
