4° (210 x 165mm). Colour-printed frontispiece and 4 colour-printed head- and tailpieces after Lawrence. Title printed in red and black, part titles and initials printed in red. (Very occasional light spotting.) Original printed wrappers, the lower wrapper with Lawrentian phoenix device after Lawrence (a few light spots on wrappers, spine ends lightly rubbed), later glassine dustwrapper. Provenance: Alexander Stuart Frere Reeves (1892-1984, presentation inscription on flyleaf 'Frere , from Frieda , and a triumphant crow!')--sale, Christie's London, 9 December 1987, lot 78, to Maggs--Mr W. Forster, his sale, Bloomsbury Book Auctions, 24 June 1998, lot 142.
FIRST EDITION, LIMITED TO 500 COPIES, THIS ONE OF 50 ON JAPANESE VELLUM, INSCRIBED BY FRIEDA LAWRENCE. Frieda Lawrence was introduced to the Heinemann editor Frere by Richard Aldington in Florence, while staying with 'Pino' Orioli during Christmas 1930-1. The two became close, and together they negotiated the first major publishing and distribution contract for D.H. Lawrence's works to follow the author's death in March 1930; it is possible that the 'triumphant crow' refers to the successful conclusion of the negotiations. Although this copy is printed on Japanese vellum, it is not signed or numbered on the half-title by Lawrence. Minkoff A27; Published in Paris p.408; Roberts Lawrence (2001) A50b.
